Blue Sky Eyes

"Buddhist nun: My 19-year-old son, Gavin and I met this peaceful vision of a soul amid the ruins in the main temple at Angkor Wat, Seim Reap, Cambodia. It was June of 2005, exactly two years before she would pass away. We were awed by her pure joy and beauty, deeply moved by the love she radiated. She doesn't own a cell phone or a credit card or a car or a checking account. She was barefoot (we later wondered if she even owned a pair of shoes). We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering through those ancient ruins, wet from the weight of the Cambodian sun, smiling and singing All You Need is Love. It was one of the very best days of my life". Taken by Annie Link

Gender

"I spent two days in this teahouse waiting unsucessfully for an empty space on a jeep going up valley. This traveller came in with his wife. She sat on the raised eating platform and heavy curtains were immediateley drawn to hide her from view. He fetched and carried tea and food for her. She sat alone for several hours". Taken by David

Improper Behaviour

"These small ivory figures are on display in the Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shanghai, China. They were used in ancient times to depict the site of pain of a female patient to the doctors in attendance who would invariably have been males. It would not have been proper to point to their own body to show the site". Taken by Mike

Out of the Soil

"Ah Patrick! I owe this man so much… He has a farm 50 km from Paris where he grows all the vegetables he sells in the market. He loves his work, always smiles, knows all customers by name. Also he always gives you more that what you paid for, adds an apple, a few carrots in you basket. Sometimes I bring him strange vegetables from India, things he has never seen... He is very curious of agriculture over there, asks me a lot of questions. Mouffetard is like a village…". Taken by Elishams

Drip Feed

In the Suzhou General Hospital, 85 km west of Shanghai, China, as in most hospitals in China today is a large room for outpatients to receive intravenous therapies. Suzhou was established in the 6th Century BC and became prominent in the Ming dynasty as a result of the Grand Canal attracting scholars and merchants who built many wonderful walled homes. These are now listed by the UN as World Heritage sites. The hospital and the iv therapy room is not one of these sites!". Taken by Mike

Meet the Peat

"Peatlands Park was the first of its type in the British Isles and was specifically established to promote and facilitate peatland awareness and issues. The peat here has been forming for about 10,000 years. The site was acquired in 1978 from the IPDC (Irish Peat Development Company) and the park was officially opened in 1990. Visitors can explore the 265ha (680 acre) site on foot along its many paths and wooden walkways". Taken by Kim Shatwell
