The Day After

"An Ecuadorian family stands in the shell of their home that was ravished by fire a day earlier. All their possessions were lost. In this neighborhood, one of the poorest in Guayaquil, one fire destroys an average of four homes. Fortunately for this family's neighbors, the brick walls prevented the fire from spreading". Illumination

"The morning of 21st December and the faithful followers of the Solstice Sunrise go to Newgrange to greet the first of the sun's rays. It's not always guaranteed that the weather will be on your side to see the sun that day but on this day (21st December 2007) everything was perfect and the sun rose in spectacular fashion". Norwegian Church

"This looks like a Norwegian Church, but what is that writing on the side...? That's not Norwegian, it's Welsh! Why - because in 1869 it was built in Bute Docks in Cardiff by Scandinavian seamen (having been brought piecemeal from Norway by sea) as a place of worship for the seamen and their families. In 1987 it was moved, again piecemeal, and reconstructed on its present site in Cardiff Bay where it now houses a Norwegian Style cafe and Art Centre". Taken by Elliott

Bridging the Towns

"Tamil Nadu, India. The bridge seen in the picture is built above River Tamiraparani that divides (or connects depending on how you look at it...) the small towns of Ambasamudram and Kallidaikurichi. The town seen in the background is Ambasamudram and the mountain ranges behind is the stretch of Western ghats crossing Papanasam.

About the bullock cart in the picture- Yes, it is still prevalently used by the farming community in our region. Most bullock carts are pretty much old-fashioned with wooden wheels and a metal cast around, open topped, driven by two bulls". The Tower of Babel

"Looking up at the financial building at night it presented a weird sight, the top covered by clouds but lighting up the sky making everything seem grey. The images presented almost appear cartoon like but have had no modification; it was just down to the surreal light". Taken by Tom Craggs

In the Air

"It is a common belief that here in Spain we go nuts about bullfights, flamenco and spend a lot of time enjoying our siesta, nothing more far from reality. As you saw yesterday in my previous post Las Arenas...we have less bullrings (I have never been to a Plaza de Toros in my life), flamenco is being blended with pop, rock, salsa or even jazz and of course we don't have time for siesta anymore, hummm, that I do miss. This bailaor of flamenco (flamenco dancer) was performing near the end of Las Ramblas, suddenly he jumps, I shoot and notice on my screen that his legs were not even blurred in the picture. You have to admit that good dancers sometimes flow in the air". Taken by Carlos Lorenzo

The Bean

"Cloud Gate, to give it it's correct title is a huge stainless steel construction by artist Anish Kapoor, erected in Millenium Park in the centre of Chicago, Illinois, USA. Originally estimated at $9 million, complications during installation pushed its price up to $23 million!... It is affectionately known as The Bean, or 'That big shiny thing in Millennium Park' and is 66 feet long, 42 feet wide and 33 feet high. You can walk under its middle, and because of its mirror polished surface gives wonderful images. It is great to see and one could waste hours and rolls of film or digital media trying to capture it". Taken by Mike
