I know it is a moth, but I can't remember what kind. A few years ago, I put a photo of one on my blog and asked the same question. I'll see if I can find it.

I don't know the name of it. Just wanted to say it is a really interesting moth!
I am pretty sure it is a Cerisy's Sphinx Moth, Smerinthus cerisyi. They range from coast to coast in the northern US and Canada as well as south into the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Mountains.
