Pre-Columbian Soccer

"This pre Columbian city (Uxmal, Mexico) was at its zenith in the years from 700 to 1000 AD and was probably built by the Mayan people. The name Uxmal is said to stand for a Mayan expression which translates as 'built three times'. There are many vast buildings here in the middle of the Yucatan jungle some 100 km from Merida the regional capital but this open arena with its stone fittings was the site of the meso-american ball game which it is thought would be played between opposing teams of warriors using a stone ball. It is thought, but there is little evidence, that the losing team was sacrificed at the end of the game - sort of 'early bath'!". Taken by Mike

The Old Tree Network

I took this picture while on holiday in Margaret River, Australia in October 2007. We kayaked up river from the mouth at the beach. Our first stop was this floating nearly 200-year-old island of tea trees, not far from the mouth. The island does not move away as the root system of the trees have anchored it quite well to the riverbed and bank. Walking on the ‘ground’ was like walking on a very damp mattress. The papery bark of the tea tree felt like thin kraft paper". Taken by Kisane

"This vista shows the so-called Avenue of the Dead with the Pyramid of the Sun on the left and was taken from the top of the Pyramid of the Moon. These enormous stone edifices, probably built by an ancient pre Columbian civilisation sometimes referred to, incorrectly, as the Aztecs but likely to be the Toltecs, is at the heart of a huge city complex at its height in about 200 after Christ. This was taken on a December morning, just before Christmas. The weather this summer and Autumn has been wet and the river is flowing fast. This concrete bridge, known as Hart's Footbridge, seems to be here in the middle of the countryside for no apparent reason, and can be found along the towpath just downstream of Newbridge". Akvavit Racing

"Grangärde, Bysjön: On Christmas day my friend and I went for a walk on the lake not far from our homes in the Central part of Sweden. The day was silent and a low cloud hung over the centre of the lake. Already the track has been prepared for the Lake Race which will take place in the first days of February. The track is marked out by planting branches in the ice as it freezes. Hundreds of us will race on skis around the ten kilometre track. There will be a lot of akvavit drinking too to keep us going".
